Frequently Asked Questions

Will Bigjigs Rail work with the Brio track we already have?

Yes, for most pieces. Bigjigs Rail is designed to work with most other major wooden railway brands, and Brio is one of the best known, so the track, bridges and trains you already own can join a new Bigjigs set. That makes it easy to add something fresh, like the Farm Train Set or the Fairy Figure of Eight Train Set, without starting your layout again. Wooden railway pieces can differ slightly between brands, so test-fit a curve or junction when you open the box. Browse our wooden train sets for new engines and track, or compare with Brio wooden trains and mix them as your child's layout grows.

How do I expand my Bigjigs Rail set, and which sets come with a table?

Start with an expansion pack that matches the layout you want, then build outward. The Curves and Straights Expansion Pack (24 pieces) and Low Level Track Expansion Pack (25 pieces) add track, the Bridge Expansion Set (18 pieces) and High Level Expansion Pack (27 pieces) add height, and the Trackside Accessory Set and Vehicle Pack fill in the scenery. If you'd like play at standing height, the City Train Set and Table and the Services Train Set and Table each come with a raised table and 59 play pieces, flat packed with assembly instructions. Find every Bigjigs Rail train set and expansion pack in our train sets collection.

Are Bigjigs toys made from sustainable (FSC) wood?

Some are, and the product name tells you which. Look for FSC in the title: the FSC Activity Pull Along Train, FSC Triangular Activity Centre, FSC Activity Walker, FSC Rabbit Stacking Rings, FSC Noah's Ark and FSC Activity Cube are all made from FSC-certified wood, which comes from responsibly managed forests. The Baking Cookies set and the Figure of Eight Roadway also list FSC-certified materials. Other Bigjigs toys are described as made from responsibly sourced materials, and responsible sourcing is part of the brand's stated mission. Check each product page for the exact materials before you buy, and start with the FSC Activity Cube or FSC Noah's Ark if sustainable wooden toys matter most to you.

Are Bigjigs toys actually worth the price compared with cheaper wooden toys?

For most families, yes, because you're paying for wooden toys with real play value, not just a low price tag. Bigjigs began in a Kent garden shed in 1985, is still family run, and states that its products conform to EN71 European toy safety standards. The sets are also built to grow with your child: Bigjigs Rail works with most other major wooden railway brands, so a 19-piece My First Train Set can become a much bigger layout over time. Compare piece counts and what's included on each product page, such as the 44-piece Farm Train Set, and choose the Bigjigs toys that suit your budget from our Bigjigs collection.

How do I clean and look after Bigjigs wooden toys?

Wipe them clean with a damp cloth, and don't submerge them in water. Bigjigs recommends this care for its wooden railway pieces, because prolonged moisture can warp the wood and affect the track connectors, so skip the dishwasher too. Avoid strong chemical cleaners, and dry any piece that gets wet straight away. Sets with steel parts, such as the Baking Cookies set, are best wiped with a dry cloth, so follow the care note on each product page. A quick wipe after play keeps wooden play food and tea sets ready for the next pretend meal, and it keeps the paint and connectors in good shape for the next session.
