Yellow and black with wobbly feelers, the Wheely Bug Bee is a ride-on toy for children from 12 months, and it comes in two sizes here: small from 12 months, large from 3 years. It arrives fully built, runs on nothing but your child's own legs, and rolls in any direction on four 360° castors. Nothing to charge, nothing to assemble, nothing missing on the morning.

A bee that's ready to ride out of the box

Most ride-on toys arrive as a flat-pack and a set of instructions. This one doesn't. There are no screws, no batteries, and no late-night assembly the night before a birthday — you lift it out of the box and it works. That's a large part of why it turns up on so many first-birthday lists, and why it's an easy one to post to a niece or a godson.

Choosing between the small and large Bee

If you're buying for your own child, height decides it. If you're buying as a gift and you're guessing, read on.

Bee size comparison

Small Large
Seat height 22 cm 26 cm
Age guide 12+ months 3+ years
Size (L × H × W) 38 × 22 × 23 cm 46 × 26 × 28 cm
Weight 1.9 kg 2.7 kg
Max rider 25 kg 25 kg

Buying as a gift and not sure of their size?

The test is whether the child can sit astride the body with both feet flat on the floor. For a first birthday, the small is the safe choice. For a two-year-old already walking confidently, go large — they'll grow into it rather than out of it. If you get it wrong, unopened items can be exchanged within 30 days.

Push, scoot and spin — how the castors work

Four castors that turn a full 360° mean the Bee goes wherever your child leans, not just where it's pointed. No steering wheel, no pedals, no coordination puzzle to solve first. Wheely Bugs are easy for children still learning to walk and stay fun well into the post-toddler years, building leg strength and balance every time they push off.

Made to survive a toddler, and to wipe clean

Yellow shows everything, so it's worth knowing the body is covered in tough PVC-free polyurethane leatheroid that cleans up with a damp cloth and mild soap. The base is plantation-grown Poplar plywood with rounded edges. It works best on timber, laminate and tile; on carpet it rolls, but not nearly as freely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is a Wheely Bug for, and is my 1-year-old ready for one?

A Wheely Bug suits children from around 12 months up to 5 years, so a 1-year-old is right in the sweet spot as long as they can sit up steadily on their own. The Small Wheely Bug is designed for 12 months to 3 years, with a low seat that a new walker can climb onto without help. Once your little one can balance while sitting, they can start scooting, and the low, wide base keeps them stable while they find their feet. If your child is closer to 3 or already confident, size up to the Large for extra room. Not sure which fits? Browse the full Wheely Bug range and match the size to your child's height and confidence, not just their birthday.

Will a Wheely Bug scratch my floorboards or tiles?

No, a Wheely Bug is made to roll safely across smooth indoor floors, including timber, tiles and vinyl. The soft multi-directional castor wheels glide rather than grind, so they will not mark or scratch your floorboards the way hard plastic ride-on toys often do. It is built for level indoor surfaces, so it is perfect for the lounge room, hallway or kitchen on a rainy day. For gentle outdoor use, stick to smooth paths or a flat patio and give the wheels a quick wipe afterwards to keep grit away. If you want more floor-friendly options for active toddlers, our full kids ride-on toys range is worth a look. Your floors, and the neighbours below, will thank you.

How do the 360-degree wheels work, and can a toddler actually steer it on their own?

Yes, steering is easy, which is the whole point of the design. Underneath every Wheely Bug sit four castor wheels that spin a full 360 degrees, so instead of only going where they are pointed, they follow wherever your child leans. Your toddler simply pushes off with their feet and shifts their weight, and the ride-on rolls forward, backward, sideways or spins on the spot. There are no pedals to coordinate and no steering wheel to master, so most little ones work it out within minutes of their first go. That quick success is a real confidence builder. See it in action on any product in the Wheely Bug collection, like the ever-popular Ladybug.

Why is a Wheely Bug worth the price compared to cheaper ride-on toys?

A Wheely Bug costs a little more because it is built to last for years, not months. Where budget ride-ons use thin plastic that cracks and hard wheels that scratch floors, a Wheely Bug is made around a tough plywood base with a soft, PVC-free padded body and smooth 360-degree castors. That means it survives daily toddler enthusiasm, stays safe on your floors, and holds up well enough to hand down to a younger sibling. It is also safety-certified to strict Australian and international standards, so you are paying for real quality rather than a look-alike. Spread across a few years of play, it is good value. Compare it with other options in our ride-on toys range and the difference in build quality speaks for itself.

Does a Wheely Bug need assembly, or is it ready to ride out of the box?

A Wheely Bug arrives ready to ride, with no tools, screws or fiddly assembly required. Lift it out of the box, and your toddler can hop on straight away, which makes it a brilliant last-minute birthday or Christmas gift. This also makes it one of the easiest ride-on toys to give, since there is no late-night flat-pack building for tired parents. Simply check the wheels spin freely and you are good to go. Because it is fully built, it is also easy to store, just tuck it in a corner or under a table between play sessions. Choose your favourite character from the Wheely Bug collection and it will turn up ready for that first proud lap of the lounge room.

What is the load limit for the Wheely Bug RIde On?

The recommended weight is 25kg but surprisingly, this little toy is stronger than you think. Each wheel has the capacity to carry 30kg which gives us a sum of 120kg in total. Yes, the tiny Wheely Bug can carry adults too in case you’d like to take it for a spin!

Are they safe for younger children?

They are generally safe. For younger toddlers, we do not recommend it yet because some sets have tiny parts. However, if you want to introduce Playmobil to younger children, you have to be on board and play with them. Do not leave them unattended with the small parts to avoid unwanted scenarios.
