A wooden xylophone shaped like a cloud

The Rainbow Wooden Xylophone is a toddler-sized instrument with a white cloud at each end and a row of colourful keys across the middle. The keys are metal and the frame is wood, which gives a clear, traditional xylophone sound instead of a plasticky clunk. A musical stick is included for tapping out a tune.

First music, first rules

Discovering sound

Little hands bang first and listen second. Within a few sessions toddlers notice that the short keys sound higher than the long ones, and that hitting softly sounds different from hitting hard. That is cause and effect, and it is also early music.

Songs to tap along to

Match the colours to a simple tune, or tap while you sing. Rainbow colours help children follow along, and a parent can point to a key to show the next note. It is also a decent tool for learning colour names.

Size and age

It measures about 22 cm long, 11 cm wide and 7 cm high, and weighs 375 g. The recommended age is 18 months and up. The wood is FSC-certified.

Why a real xylophone beats a noisy toy

Electronic toys play a tune on a button press. A wooden xylophone asks the child to make the sound, and that effort is part of the learning. It is also easier on the ear than most battery toys, which parents tend to appreciate. Browse our musical toys for other instruments.
