A fairytale in a box

This Little Red Riding Hood wooden toy is a plywood box with a sliding lid. Open it and a woodland scene appears: a cottage deep in the trees, with the back of the lid turning into the forest floor and a path leading to the front door.

The cast

Red Riding Hood, her grandmother, the woodsman and the big bad wolf are all in the set. Two trees and two forest animals fill out the woods. Turn the wardrobe into a bed, add a picnic and let the wolf lurk behind a tree.

Retell it or rewrite it

Children can follow the old story to the end, or change it. Maybe the wolf is friendly. Maybe grandmother wins. Retelling a familiar tale builds language, sequencing and imagination, and it gives children confidence in telling stories of their own.
